Top Romanian club FCSB is reportedly interested in signing Orlando Pirates in-form striker Tshegofatso Mabasa.
Mabasa, 27, is currently joint top scorer in the DStv Premiership with 11 goals alongside Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro and Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo. He has also scored five goals in the last four Premiership matches.
‘FCSB want Tshegofatso Mabasa’
According to his agent Gary Cassisa, Mabasa could be Europe-bound next season and may well end up at FCSB, who are primed to play in the UEFA Champions League. They currently top the Romanian Super Liga with an 11-point lead.
Local league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns are also reportedly keen on securing his services. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a player who was on loan to Moroka Swallows during the first half of the season.
“At this point, his decision has to be considerate of his future as a player considering his age. Sundowns have the financial muscles to get him. But a chance at playing in the [UEFA] Champions League is not easy to resist,” Cassisa told FARPost.
“FSCB want him. At the moment, I’m also talking to other clubs in Europe. But the idea is to help him keep his calm until the season is over. The good thing is that Pirates are ready to sell.”
At a media briefing this weekend, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro underscored Mabasa’s importance to the team in recent games.
“Constantly he’s offering us other options and possibilities for the players that are playing around. For our number 10s, it’s helping us to be aggressive in our pressing. He’s the first defender of the team when we don’t have the ball,” Riveiro said.
Mabasa’s contract at Pirates runs until June 2026.
