SASSA has announced the opening of its system to allow R350 SRD grant applicants to change their banking details or update their payment method.
In a press release on Thursday (2 September), SASSA said the system will be open from Friday, 3 September 2021 until 10 September 2021.
Bank account is ‘the most convenient’
“Applicants of the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD R350 Grant) can change their method of payment for their money to be paid into a bank account,” the Agency said.
“The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) confirms the bank account method as the most convenient and quickest way to receive the grant, thereby avoiding queues at the Post Office. The window to change payment method opens on 03 until 10 September 2021, while the other social grants are being paid.
“The Post Office does not pay the SRD grant during the normal social grant payments of the old age, disability and children’s grants.”
SASSA advised caregivers who receive child grants that their approved SRD grants are being paid through their SASSA payment cards.
“These clients who have received the R350 grant in their SASSA card are advised not to collect at the Post Office, but to access the money at merchants or bank ATMs. These clients are reminded that they can also use the card to pay for purchases and not necessarily only to withdraw cash,” it added.
“Clients whose grants are approved and paid through the Post Office must await an SMS notification that the grant is available, to confirm where and when they can collect their SRD grant.”
How to change SRD banking details or update payment method
To change your SRD banking details or update the payment method, simply visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za/said and scroll down until you see the “How do I update my banking details” sub-heading.
Next, write your ID number in the field provided and click on the “Submit” link, which is the banking details submission link that only becomes active once you enter the full 13 digits of your ID number.
You will then receive an SMS containing a unique and secure link on the mobile phone number you used during application. Click on the link in the SMS and follow the instructions.
“Should you select payment into a bank account, please ensure that you are the owner of the account. SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person’s bank account,” SASSA explained.
“Should you select the money transfer option via one of the major banks, please ensure that the mobile phone number on which you received the SMS is registered in your name. SASSA cannot pay your grant into a mobile phone number which is registered to another person. Please also note that the new banking details will only be used for future payments, after verification.”
UPDATE: On Tuesday, 7 September 2021, SASSA tweeted, “The window period to change payment methods for the special COVID-19 SRD grant opens the 1st of each month. The September window will be open from 03 until 10 September 2021 while the normal grant payments are made.”
UPDATE: On Wednesday, 22 September 2021, SASSA tweeted, “Payment method for the special COVID-19 SRD grant can now be changed on any day of the month.”

I am since unemployed and have been unable to reapply for an identity document and now I only have an id copy that is not certified and an affidavit that explains why I do not have an ID or why I haven’t been able to apply for one…..
