The Gauteng provincial government, in partnership with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), has launched a “Request a Slot” campaign as part of a new driver’s licence renewal booking system.
In a statement on Wednesday (1 September), Roads and Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the campaign will run concurrently with the Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign and vaccination programmes at taxi ranks.
New driver’s licence renewal booking system
According to Mamabolo, drivers can request a slot on a new web-based licence renewal system “at their own convenience.” This means that the responsibility falls on drivers to make the request.
This is a departure from the previous practice where the government sent slot availability notices to drivers whose licences were expiring soon.
“Through this campaign, we seek to form partnerships with people, motorists and license cardholders to create platforms for them to request a slot. Applicants will be allocated slots within 30 days, upon receipt of the required, full information by the Department,” Mamabolo explained.
The Department will use the information to prioritise renewal of licences that expired during the COVID-19 lockdown period or earlier.
How to request a slot
Drivers can request a slot by emailing one of the following addresses:
- requestaslot@gauteng.gov.za (If you’re in Gauteng)
- requestaslot@rtmc.co.za
Alternatively, drivers can make an online booking via the Natis website here.
The MEC added that the Department is currently developing an Android-based Application (APP), which will be available from 6 September 2021.
He encouraged drivers to honour their booking slots (appointments) or communicate their inability to do so. This would allow the Department to allocate the slot to other drivers.
The massive licence backlog forced Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula to extend the grace period for expired licences until March 2022.
“All learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits that expire during the period that commenced from 26 March 2020 up to and including 31 August 2021 are deemed to be valid and their validity periods are extended for a further grace period ending on 31 March 2022,” he said last week.
