The much-anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4 action movie got off to a flyer on its opening weekend in South Africa, raking in more than R7 million at the local Box Office.

The film, which opened in cinemas locally on Friday, 24 March, is currently number one in South Africa. It is the fourth instalment of the popular John Wick action franchise, which has been billed as one of the best in the 21st century.

John Wick: Chapter 4 cast

In John Wick: Chapter 4, Wick (played by Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating the High Table. However, he must square up against a new enemy before he can earn his freedom, in the process dealing with powerful global alliances and friends-turned-foes.

Joining Reeves in the cast is Laurence Fishburne, who was also part of 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. Action icon Donnie Yen also joins the cast as newcomer Caine, an ex-assassin and Wick’s old friend.

Ian McShane returns as Winston, the owner of Continental Hotel, while Lance Reddick reprises his role as the concierge, Charon. Other newcomers are Bill Skarsgård as a member of the High Table and Shamier Anderson, who plays a nameless character known only as the Tracker.

Reviews

Internationally, reviews of John Wick: Chapter 4 have been glowing, with many critics touting it as the best action film of the year.

According to Nick Schager of The Daily Beast, “this fourth adventure – like those that preceded it – thrillingly and savagely slays its modern action competition.” Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment adds: “Between the range of action we see, the creativity of the various settings and set pieces, and the way Reeves acts all through it, it’s a true wonder to behold.”

But the film is not just all about the action. “Director Chad Stahelski and screenwriters Shay Hatten and Michael Finch carry through themes surrounding consequence and the passage of time while also strengthening them with added sentiments on absolution, fate, fidelity and friendship,” explains Fresh Fiction’s Courtney Howard.

The trailer is available to watch on YouTube and the flick is already in cinemas.
