Contactless and cardless payments have become fashionable in South Africa – and if you wish to join the party, you may need to know how to pay with FNB virtual card if you bank with FNB.
According to the bank, virtual cards are easy to create, and you can cancel or temporarily block them at any time. They also have the added security feature of changing their three-digit CVV number every hour for more secure online shopping.
You can also use the cards to make online purchases, pay at tills, pay for subscriptions such as Netflix and make payments via partner wallet transactions such as Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.
So, how do you pay with an FNB virtual card? This article offers a simple and straightforward guide, starting from registration to making the actual payments.
How to pay with FNB virtual card
If you’re using an Android smartphone, you can pay with FNB virtual card through FNB Pay. If you’re using an iPhone, you can pay through Apple Pay.
Android devices
If you have an Android device, make sure you register first for FNB Pay and your phone is NFC-enabled. To register for FNB Pay, you’ll need the latest version of the FNB Banking App and at least one eligible FNB Visa debit or credit card.
Register by following the steps below:
- Log into the FNB app and tap “Payments.”
- Tap “FNB Pay” followed by “Tap to Pay.”
- Tap “Register” on the bottom right.
- Choose a virtual card to load on FNB Pay and set it as the default card. If you don’t have a virtual card already, you can create it on the app easily.
- Tap “Continue” and follow the prompts to complete your registration.
Once you have successfully registered on FNB Pay and loaded the virtual card, you can pay with FNB virtual card by following the steps below:
- Unlock your phone with your passcode (PIN, fingerprint, pattern or password).
- Tap or hold your phone on top of the point-of-sale (POS) device, such as a card machine.
- The payment will go through without you having to enter a card PIN. However, you will be required to enter a PIN if the amount is greater than R500.
“When you register for FNB Pay, your security mode default is ‘Unlock Phone & Pay.’ If you changed the security mode to ‘Password & Pay’ under the FNB Banking App Settings for FNB Pay, you will need to launch the FNB Banking App every time you want to make a payment,” the bank explains in its FAQs document for this service.
iPhones
If you’re using an iPhone, you need to first load your virtual card on Apple Pay before you can make your virtual card payments.
Follow the steps below to load your card:
- Log into FNB app and tap “Cards.”
- Select your virtual card and tap “Add to Apple Wallet.”
- Follow the prompts to finalise.
Once you have successfully loaded the card on Apple Pay, you can pay with FNB virtual card by following the steps below:
- Double click the side button of your iPhone. This will open Apple Pay.
- Unlock your phone with your passcode (PIN, fingerprint, pattern or password).
- Tap or hold your phone on top of the point-of-sale (POS) device, such as a card machine.
- The payment will go through without you having to enter a card PIN. However, you may be required to enter a PIN if the amount is greater than R500.
You can similarly load your virtual card on other partner wallets such as Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay.
FNB Scan to Pay
Both Android and iPhone users can also pay with FNB virtual card using the Scan to Pay feature, which uses QR codes.
Follow the easy steps below:
- Log into the FNB app and on the home screen, tap ‘”Scan to Pay.”
- Alternatively, tap “Payments” followed by “FNB Pay” and “Scan to Pay.”
- Scan the applicable merchant QR Code.
- Choose your virtual card.
- Enter the transaction amount and confirm the transaction to pay.
