The recently launched SABC Plus online streaming app, which can be downloaded from iPhone’s App Store and Android’s Google Play, has added a festive season pop-up channel.
According to a recent SABC media statement, the pop-up channel launched on 6 December 2022 and will run until 8 January 2023.
“The channel is urban youth-focused, rooted in modern South African pop culture, offering content that speaks to the youthful African generation and celebrates Festive lifestyle and general current trends,” the state-owned broadcaster said.
Music and comedy – alongside local and global celebrities – are the channel’s primary offerings. For instance, the Pop Profiles series tells the stories of global music stars such as Lady Gaga, Allen, Pink, Snoop Dog, Eminem and Britney Spears.
Other shows include Biggest Weekend With Sam Smith, Katy Perry World Tour, Billie Eilish Glastonbury Festival, Jorja Smith’s live performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2019, Ed Sheeran Live at iTunes Festival and Janelle Monae Glastonbury 2019 Festival.
Viewers can also catch some of SABC Video Entertainment’s classic shows such as Live Amp, Soul’d Out Sessions, Gospel Classics, Afro Café featuring Ringo Madlingozi, and Brothers and Sisters of Soul.
Comedy lovers are not left behind. They can enjoy shows like Comedy Central Roast of Somizi, The Roast of AKA and the Roast Battle 2018.
“The strategy behind creating the Festive Pop-up channel is that it allows SABC to offer 24-hour content focused on music and comedy. Audiences can tune in from any device at different destinations, allowing the SABC to be everywhere for everyone,” Group Executive for SABC Video Entertainment Merlin Naicker said.
The public broadcaster launched SABC+ in November, much to the delight of many South Africans. The digital streaming platform has both free and paid plans. The free plan streams all SABC TV, radio, news, education, sport and catch-up content for free.
Subscribers of the paid plans, collectively known as AMP, get additional content from channels such as BBC World News, Boing, FashionTV and TNT Africa.
