To can check your balance on Standard Bank without using an app, you need to first register for cellphone banking if you haven’t done so already.
Simply dial the USSD code *120*2345# on your phone and follow the prompts to register. You will need to provide your card number, PIN and ID number to complete the straightforward registration process.
Once you have successfully registered, you can access cellphone banking and check your balance by dialling the USSD code *120*2345# or *130*2345# and selecting the balances option.
Balance inquiries are free of charge. “Your cellphone service provider will charge for the amount of information sent to and from your cellphone. These charges are usually low, but are set by your network,” Standard Bank however advises.
Remember, always sign out of your cellphone banking profile once you have completed your inquiry or transaction. Furthermore, secure your cellphone with a strong PIN or password.
Other options
Another convenient balance inquiry option which does not need an app is internet or online banking. You can register on Standard Bank’s online banking page and access your account afterwards – with your balances displayed on your profile.
Make sure you have your ID document or passport ready. Additionally, make sure to provide your own cellphone number because you will receive one-time PINs via SMS to log in to your activated profile or perform transactions.
A third option is telephone banking, an automated service that allows customers to perform transactions on their accounts by calling from their cellphones and following the prompts. To register or transact, call 0860 123 108 between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday or between 8am and 4pm on weekends and public holidays.
A fourth option is the good old ATM machine. You can visit your nearest machine with your card, insert it and enter your PIN. Your balances will be displayed on the screen.
