Popular streaming service Disney Plus is set to officially launch in South Africa in May, according to a media statement it issued on Tuesday (29 March).
The South African debut is part of the company’s wider expansion into 11 new territories and 42 countries around the world, including Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Morocco in Africa.
Disney Plus price in South Africa
Disney Plus has set its subscription price in South Africa at R119 per month and R1,190 per annum.
The Disney+ official launch date in South Africa is set for 18 May 2022, which means eager viewers in the country have just under two months before enjoying world-famous content.
“Disney+ offers access to high-quality viewing up to four concurrent streams, unlimited downloads on up to ten devices, and the ability to set up to seven different profiles, including the ability for parents to set Kids Profiles that have an easy-to-navigate, child-friendly interface to access age-appropriate content,” the company said in its statement.
The new online streaming entrant is likely to stir up competition in the local market as Netflix, Prime Video, BritBox, Apple TV, eVOD and Showmax look to consolidate their respective positions.
Disney+ movies and series to look forward to
“With exclusive original content and thousands of episodes and movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and general entertainment from Star, Disney+ is the streaming home for some of the world’s most beloved stories,” the service said.
“Subscribers will have access to Star Wars’ The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian from executive producer and writer Jon Favreau.”
South Africans who subscribe to the service will access popular content at launch, including Marvel Studios’ series Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac and Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings starring Simu Liu and Awkwafina.
“Subscribers will also be able to enjoy Disney and Pixar’s Luca, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning Encanto, which tells the tale of an extraordinary family called the Madrigals, and Academy Award-winning Cruella starring Emma Stone as the legendary Cruella de Vil,” Disney+ said.
Household titles such as The Simpsons, Queens, and The Kardashians will also be on offer, while the scientifically inclined can catch both seasons of the National Geographic’s The World According To Jeff Goldblum.
Disney+ first announced its foray into South Africa last year, and local viewers will be pleased that the date is finally around the corner.
Launch offer
In a subsequent update on 19 April, Disney Plus announced that South Africans who register early to subscribe to the streaming service will get an introductory price of just R950 for an annual subscription.
To claim the offer, prospective subscribers need to visit http://www.disneyplus.com to register their interest and agree to the standard terms and conditions.
Those who have registered will then receive an exclusive offer link from launch day (18 May). Pre-registration will be available until midnight on 17 May 2022.
The offer means that subscribers will get a year’s access to the service for the price equivalent of eight months.
