The newly launched Post Office online licence renewal for motor vehicles makes is convenient for motorists who may not have time to visit SAPO branches.
In a statement announcing the launch of the service on Monday (31 January), SAPO said motorists can renew their car licences from any electronic mobile device. The service is available in all provinces of South Africa except Western Cape, which will be introduced soon.
“The full renewal process, including payment, will be done online, leaving only the last step of accessing the actual disc. This will be done in one of two ways: the SA Post Office can deliver the disc to the customer at an affordable delivery fee or the disc can be collected from a Post Office counter,” spokesperson Johann Kruger said.
“The online renewal process is quick and simple once a vehicle owner has completed the once-off registration process. The Post Office has taken all the necessary steps to ensure that customer data is secure.”

What it costs
“Payment is done safely and securely through Masterpass, which the user can download from the Google Play Store for Android devices and the Apple App Store for Apple devices,” Kruger explained.
“No commission is charged on the renewal transaction. The cost of delivery to door is R75 and there is no charge to the customer when it is collected from a Post Office counter.
“The customer will receive an SMS when the disc arrives at the destination Post Office for collection or when it goes out for delivery. Turnaround time is three working days, while it may be up to two days longer for outlying areas.”
Remember, besides the R75 delivery fee (if you choose this option), you will also be charged the normal renewal licence cost for your vehicle as per NaTIS (National Traffic Information System) as well as any arrears or penalties.
