Bolt Food South Africa has launched its app-based delivery service in Johannesburg after achieving success in Cape Town.
In a statement on Wednesday (20 October), Bolt Food SA country manager James Townsend-Rose said the service has experienced 50 percent month-on-month growth in Cape Town.
“We piloted Bolt Food in Cape Town last year with outstanding results,” he said. “Restaurants and their customers welcomed Bolt Food’s affordable prices and quick deliveries and we are excited to bring this solution to Johannesburg and to other South African cities in the coming months.”
Cape Town residents can order from more than 800 restaurants on the food app, a sign of rapid expansion since the service was launched in the Mother City in April last year.
Bolt Food in Johannesburg
In Johannesburg, residents will have access to around 300 restaurants and fast food outlets via the Bolt Food app during the launch period.
At the moment, the service is available from the Bryanston region, north of Johannesburg, to Braamfontein, with rapid expansion expected as more restaurants sign up to the platform.
Among the food outlets already signed up include Burger King, Pizza Hut, Subway, Andiccio’s and Del Forno.
The company said customers ordering food within a 4.5km radius of the restaurant will not be charged delivery fees during the launch period. Standard charges will then apply after the launch period, starting from R2 within a 3km radius.
Customers may also benefit from discounts of up to 50 percent on selected restaurants as part of the Johannesburg launch specials, the company added.

The Bolt Food app is available for download on Android’s Google Play store here and iOS App store here.
With the expansion, Bolt Food is taking on the more established Uber Eats and Mr D Food as competition in the food delivery services sector heats up.
The competition has driven innovation, notably Bolt Food’s partnership with Cape Town’s Pathway Cycles in June to pilot delivery using electrical bicycles.
