Inland schools
Public schools in the inland provinces (Mpumalanga, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo and North West) will start their school year on 12 January 2022 and end on 14 December 2022.
This translates to 199 actual school days spread across 43 weeks. The school terms are as follows:
- 12 January – 17 March
- 5 April – 24 June
- 19 July – 30 September
- 11 October – 14 December
Coastal schools
Public schools in the coastal provinces (Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape) will start their school year one week later on 19 January 2022 and end on 14 December 2022.
They will recover the delayed start by closing the first term a week later than inland schools, which means the actual school days will still be 199, also spread across 43 weeks.
The school terms are as follows:
- 19 January – 25 March
- 5 April – 24 June
- 19 July – 30 September
- 11 October – 14 December
The 2022 school calendar is unlikely to experience the disruptions and delays witnessed in 2020 and 2021 caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schooling is already returning to full normalcy and it is expected that teachers and learners will start receiving COVID-19 vaccines in the second half of the year.
Motshekga, who was vaccinated on Tuesday (1 June), told reporters that she supports the call for teachers to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
