The latest news of Dr Tumi and his wife’s arrest has grabbed the attention of South Africans on social media, including EFF MP Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

The 39-year-old Dr Tumi, whose surname is Makweya, and his wife Kgaogelo Sara Makweya, 36, appeared at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday (6 April).

Case against Dr Tumi and his wife

The state accuses them of allegedly defrauding the National Lotteries Board alongside Christopher Tshivule and Thomas Ndadza.

It is alleged that the four suspects, who were listed as committee members of a nonprofit organisation, altered grant application documents sent to the Board in 2018.

As a result, the Board reportedly transferred R1.5 million into a private bank account. Of this amount, Dr Tumi and his wife allegedly benefitted R760,000.

Dr Tumi and his wife were released on R3,000 bail, while Tshivule and Ndadza got R5,000 bail. The case was postponed to 7 May 2021.

Mbuyiseni Ndlozi stirs debate

As news of Dr Tumi’s arrest spread, Ndlozi appeared to come to his defence in a tweet he posted early on Wednesday morning.

He posted a picture of the popular gospel artiste and wrote, “No weapon formed against you shall prosper!”

Some of Ndlozi’s followers accused him and the EFF of double standards. @RicaSga85 replied, “Corruption will never end [because] we still believe that certain people are not corrupt but certain people are.

“We spend much time defending our favourites and crucifying those who we don’t like. You are no different to ANC Women’s League.”

@ddmhlanga1 added, “Is it politically motivated Dr? Why don’t you wait until he’s acquitted by court of law? SA will never end this cancer called corruption because some are corrupt [while] some are not corrupt even when evidence is there.”

However, some jumped to Ndlozi and Dr Tumi’s defence. “Let’s wait for the court to pronounce. Until then, let’s shelve our love for him and hatred for him. Yes I love this couple and I just hope they [are] innocent and will continue to pray for them,” @DrGray12072793 argued.
