If you own an iPhone 12 and are on the Vodacom network, you can finally connect your device to Vodacom 5G, the mobile operator announced on Monday (8 February 2021).
“Vodacom is pleased to share that we’re now offering 5G cellular support for the powerful new iPhone 12 lineup,” Vodacom said in a statement.
It advised subscribers to visit its website to learn more about establishing a Vodacom 5G plan. This involves checking whether you fall within the operator’s 5G coverage area and choosing a 5G contract/deal.
Vodacom 5G coverage map
To check the Vodacom 5G coverage map, visit Vodacom’s website here and enter your street address. The interface will display Vodacom 5G deals if you’re within a coverage area.
“Your SIM will be provisioned for 5G within 24 hours after you’ve activated a 5G contract with us,” the company states on its website.
“If you’re using a 5G-compatible device in an area that doesn’t have 5G coverage, it will automatically fall back to the Vodacom signal that’s available there. Your 5G smartphone will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you’re back in a 5G area.”
Vodacom now joins MTN in offering 5G support on the iPhone 12 range, nearly two months after MTN announced its offering.
It is understood that Apple had not yet “certified” Vodacom’s 5G network, thereby allowing MTN to take full advantage of its 5G monopoly among iPhone 12 users.
Both mobile operators started selling iPhone 12 devices in December 2020 and while the were all 5G-enabled, only MTN customers could access 5G.
