MTN has emerged as the best mobile network in South Africa, according to MyBroadband Insights’ Quarter 3 2020 Mobile Network Quality Report.
MyBroadband released the report on Monday. It is based on nearly 335,000 speed tests performed by thousands of MyBroadband Speed Test App users between 1 July and 30 September, 2020.
Average mobile speeds in South Africa
The survey found that the average mobile download speed is South Africa was 29.16Mbps during the period under review. The average upload speed was 11.46Mbps.
MTN had the highest average download speed of all networks at 55.11Mbps. Vodacom was second at 29.80Mbps.
Telkom scooped third place with 23.60Mbps average speed, while Cell C was fourth at 17.82Mbps. Rain was the slowest with 10.02Mbps.
The government released temporary spectrum to mobile operators during the lockdown, thereby enabling them to boost their network capacity.
This boosted average speeds across the networks except Rain, whose average speed fell by 30 percent, MyBroadband found.
Best mobile network in South Africa
The report used a “Network Quality Score” to establish the best mobile network in South Africa.
It calculated the score out of 10 using factors such as average download and upload speeds as well as latency.
MTN again emerged top with a score of 9.68. It was followed by Vodacom, Telkom, Cell C and Rain in that order.
