The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has reminded vehicle owners that the deadline for renewal of their licence discs is Tuesday, 22 September, 2020.
In July, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula gazetted an extension of the validity period for motor vehicle licence discs, permits and roadworthy certificates that expired between 26 March and 31 May.
Mbalula granted the extension, which was necessary because of the lockdown implemented from 27 March, until 31 August, 2020.
Motorists were then entitled to a further 21 days to renew their car licence discs, permits and roadworthy certificates without incurring penalties for late renewal. This period ends on Tuesday at close of business, RTMC said in a statement on Monday.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said, “Motorists who fail to renew vehicle licences by end of business tomorrow (22 September) will incur additional costs for late renewal.
“Penalties are calculated at 10 percent of the annual licencing fees per month. They also run the risk of receiving traffic fines of up to R1,000 if stopped by traffic officers while operating an unlicensed motor vehicle on a public road.”
Zwane noted that more than 2.4 million motorists whose licence discs had expired benefitted from the extension. Out of these, 1.7 million (69 percent) had renewed their licences by the end of last week.
“The RTMC is satisfied with the public’s response to the extension and calls on those who have not yet renewed to take urgent steps to comply and save money,” he added.
DA calls for extension
Earlier on Monday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) called for a further extension of the motor vehicle licence renewal deadline because most licensing offices were “understaffed” during the previous lockdown levels.
“We will write to Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula today to request that the licence category of vehicle registrations be extended to 31 January, 2021,” DA MP Chris Hunsinger said.
The 22 September, 2020 deadline should not be confused with the deadline for renewal of learner’s licences, driver’s licences, temporary driver’s licences and professional driving permits, which is 31 January, 2021.
