Microsoft reveals Xbox Series S price in South Africa

South African fans of Xbox have been eagerly awaiting the local pricing of the new Xbox Series S after Microsoft unveiled the console on Tuesday (8 September).

Microsoft has billed the console as the “next-gen performance in the smallest Xbox ever.” Its US pricing was revealed as $299, with an option for a $25-a-month Xbox All Access financing plan.

Xbox Series S price in South Africa

In a tweet on Wednesday, Xbox South Africa said the Xbox Series S price in South Africa is R6,999. This is the recommended retail price (RRP).

Microsoft is believed to have been developing two next-generation Xbox consoles for a while now with a similar pricing scheme as the Xbox One X and Xbox One S.

The Xbox Series S one half of the two consoles, with the other one being the Xbox Series X, whose pricing has not yet been officially released.

However, in an article earlier this week, tech and gaming website Windows Central claimed to have received details of Xbox Series X price from unnamed sources.

It claimed that the Xbox Series X price will be $499 in the US, with a $35-a-month Xbox All Access financing option.

It further claimed that the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X release date will be 10 November, 2020. International rollout, including in South Africa, is expected soon thereafter.

Xbox Series S specs

Microsoft has not yet officially released the Xbox Series S specs. However, several leaks have placed pointers to what fans might expect. A summary gleaned from Windows Central is as follows:

Processor: 8x Cores @ 3.8 GHz (3.66 GHz w/ SMT) Custom Zen 2 CPU. Graphics: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUs @ 1.55 GHz Custom RDNA 2 GPU. Memory: 10 GB GDDR6.

Internal storage: 512 GB Custom NVME SSD. Expandable storage: 1 TB Expansion Card. External storage: USB 3.2 External HDD Support. Performance target: Up to 1440p @ 120 FPS.

The Xbox Series S reportedly does not have an optical drive. It comes in colours of matte white and black, and is believed to be 60 percent smaller than the Xbox Series X.
