The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (PRASA) is creating 3,100 security guard jobs across the country to protect its rail infrastructure and other assets.
In a statement on Monday, PRASA said the protection officials will be insourced and will fall into three categories – static and train guards, operations monitoring controllers and armed response guards.
The agency said, “PRASA’s focus is to ensure a holistic protection service for the organisation’s assets, commuters as well as employees.
“The new recruits will also focus on general crime prevention which, once rooted out, will most likely see a significant decrease in the vandalism of PRASA’s properties and theft of assets.”
The latest recruits follow the appointment of 596 platform marshals whose task is to promote passenger compliance with COVID-19 health protocols. It also terminated security contracts recently after the Public Protector and Auditor-General found they were irregular.
Insourcing security operations will enhance security at PRASA’s infrastructure while creating much-needed jobs, PRASA’s administrator Bongisizwe Mpondo said.
He explained, “Employing our own security personnel will give us greater control of the protection of our network and assets. Our intention is to give preference to qualifying individuals who reside in communities near our rail network.
“PRASA, as a state-owned company, has a responsibility to ensure that where it makes business sense, it must provide employment to citizens.”
