At just 22 years old, Joburg-based exciting talent Dave Jayie is on a mission to make waves in South Africa’s music industry.
The budding singer, songwriter and record producer has dropped his debut single titled SOS – a catchy track with compelling lyrics and theme.
“The song is intentionally written and composed to interrupt the current pop conversation in the industry. The aim is to grow the industry by expanding and diversifying mainstream music,” says Jayie.
Pop – with soul undertones
The rising star’s signature style offers a unique experience for listeners as he combines heavy synths and an ’80s aesthetic with RnB and hip-hop-inspired lyrics.
This is why, even though Jayie classes his music under the broad umbrella of pop, fans will hear alternative pop and soul too, with darker, nightmarish undertones enriching the enduring beat.
SOS also has a heavy theme that echoes the late pop legend Michael Jackson’s messages about divisions in modern society.
It offers topical commentary on the outbreak of illnesses and the toxic effects of violence in society. Commendably, it aims to bring awareness and rally people behind peace and unity.
From Cape Town to Joburg
Jayie began composing and producing music when he was still a BA (Creative Media) student in Cape Town, making the most of every open mic platform that he could find along the way.
The young talent moved to Joburg upon completing his degree. He has been steadily building his music career since then, culminating in the debut single SOS.
Fans of Michael Jackson will definitely enjoy SOS, as Jayie’s style in the track bears some resemblance to the King of Pop’s.
Jackson’s influence is also evident in Jayie’s image – such as his large and impressive afro that is reminiscent of Jackson in his younger years.
Dave Jayie has arrived in the South African music industry shining bright and bold as he uses his voice to make a statement. What’s next for this trailblazer will certainly be thrilling to follow.
