Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is celebrating his 39th birthday today (3 March) and he’s thanking “God and our ancestors” for it.
In a Twitter post on Tuesday morning, he wrote, “Ngwana Koko Sarah. Still carried by genuine prayers of my grandmother. We thank God and our ancestors for the gift of life. Just for control, nje…”
The fiery opposition leader showed his softer side as he accompanied the post with pictures of himself and his wife, Mantoa Malema.
‘CIC inspires a nation’
The EFF organised a pre-birthday party for Malema at its offices in Johannesburg on Monday because he was planning to spend his big day with his family.
In a statement issued later in the day, the party said, “The CIC [commander-in-chief] continues to inspire a nation of people who have been subjected to the inhumanities of racism to fight for their dignity in all corners of society.”
The EFF added, “He has inspired many into activism while shaking the status quo that is defined by corruption and the oppression of our people.”
Twitter users have been sharing their birthday wishes messages to Malema using hashtags such as #JuliusMalema and #HappyBirthdayCIC.
Birthday wishes to Malema
EFF MP Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi tweeted, “This generation is indebted to your gifts, wisdom, courage and absolute love for our people. South Africa, the African continent, the diaspora and Cuba loves you! Long Live.”
EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu also wrote, “Happy Birthday to the CIC in the war for total economic emancipation. May God bless him and [his] family to continue proving decisive leadership to the only dependable forces of the Left! Many people’s lives have been changed due to his impactful leadership and it will be so forever!”
Wishes also came from across party lines, including from Zindzi Mandela, the daughter of the late African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, whose fondness for Malema was widely known.
She tweeted a photo of her mother and Malema along with the simple caption, “Happy birthday comrade CIC.”
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi wrote, “Best wishes and happy birthday comrade CIC @Julius_S_Malema.”
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, whom Malema succeeded as ANC Youth League President in 2008, also tweeted, “Happy Birthday Mokone. More years of health, happiness and absolute focus to you.”
