A South African man has walked 450km from Tzaneen in Limpopo to Johannesburg to raise awareness about active fatherhood.

Nyiko Masango, a fitness trainer and motivational speaker who is also known as Mr Dynamix, started his long trek on 20 January.

By mid-morning on Wednesday, he had arrived in Midrand. His last stop will be at the Zoo Lake in Johannesburg.

‘Be involved in your kids’ lives’

Masango’s mission is to encourage South African dads to play a meaningful role in their kids’ lives beyond merely providing financial support.

Speaking to TimesLIVE, he said, “I want fathers to be involved in the lives of their children, holistically.

“They need to see the importance of being involved fully in the lives of their children. They must be there spiritually and any other way.”

Masango has been documenting his long walk on his Facebook profile. Some of the challenges he encountered included foot injuries and the hot weather.

Climbed Mt Kilimanjaro

Friends supported him by closely following him for a number of days using a “support car” which lessened the load he had to carry on his backpack.

They also dropped him off at guesthouses for overnight accommodation and back on the road to resume his trek at daybreaks.

This isn’t the first impressive mission Masango has embarked upon. According to his Facebook bio, he also climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in September last year to raise the same awareness.

He reached Tanzania by cycling from Tzaneen. He has also walked 700km seven times, all in support of his “Presence in Fatherhood” awareness campaign.

Masango’s mission has inspired hundreds of Facebook users who have encouraged him on his regular updates.

Facebook user Mankoana Lebogang Madia commented, “You go Sir, we behind you all the way. We love and support your great initiative. Big up to you.”
