Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has claimed that “the whites bought” the African National Congress (ANC).
In a tweet on Monday afternoon, Malema said even apartheid leader FW de Klerk “contributed to buying of this thing called ANC.”
He was apparently reacting to weekend revelations of who funded President Cyril Ramaphosa’s CR17 ANC presidential campaign in 2017.
Among those revealed to have funded it include the Oppenheimer family and Goldman Sachs Southern African CEO Colin Coleman.
‘White monopoly capital’
Malema has repeatedly stated that the billionaire Oppenheimer represents “white monopoly capital” and “Stellenbosch mafia.”
In his reply to the Presidency Budget Vote in Parliament in July, the EFF leader warned Ramaphosa not to listen to “white monopoly capital.”
We know your proximity to Stellenbosch; we know your proximity to Oppenheimers. We’ve not elected Oppenheimers.
Listen to the collective wisdom of the people you’re elected with, not white monopoly capital. It will not be here to defend you.
Once you listen to white monopoly capital, you must know that you’re likely not to finish your term.

Ramaphosa has maintained that there was nothing wrong, ethically or legally, with the CR17 campaign fundraising.
