Lorch shines as Orlando Pirates claim Soweto Derby bragging rights

If there were any doubts that Thembinkosi Lorch was last season’s PSL player of the season, he disproved them in Saturday’s Soweto Derby.

The forward scored a beautiful curler past Kaizer Chiefs goalie Bruce Bvuma half an hour into the game to double Pirates’ lead.

The Buccaneers’ first goal came through Augustine Mulenga in the 18th minute after some enterprising play by Justin Shonga.

The two great sides produced an enthralling performance worthy of a Soweto Derby, especially in the first half.

Chiefs pressed, but a combination of bad luck and poor execution meant they couldn’t get one past Pirates.

Fans packed the FNB Stadium and created a lively atmosphere. Nevertheless, Chiefs fans began leaving once it became clear that the result was beyond doubt.

This is Pirates’ 5th Carling Black Label Cup glory in eight years and cements their dominance of the season opener.

For Chiefs, it’s back to the drawing back to prevent another disappointing season ahead.
